All Scout Leaders attend the New Leader Essentials course, which is, in effect, an "Introduction to Boy Scouting". This course presents the aims, purposes and methods of the BSA and generally how Units work. This needs to be taken only once. The major revisions to Scout Leader training, featuring a more modular "Training Continuum", became effective in 2001. These revisions resulted in the training requirements for leaders to wear the "Trained" patch to be different. The same materials are covered in a different format and combinations of courses. A volunteer then takes the "Job Specific" course for their currently registered position. Then, for some volunteers, the Introduction to Outdoor Leadership Skills finishes off the training. If a volunteer was fully trained for their current position before the change in the training format they are still fully trained until a change in position occurs, then the volunteer would need to attend the new training.
The final step in training is to attend and complete WOOD BADGE.
